Review: Escape Through the Wilderness

Escape Through the Wilderness - Gary Rodriguez

Ugh. I wanted to like this book but it just didn't work for me. While geared toward young adults, these 16 and 17 year old kids seemed to have the dialogue and interpersonal skills of a 12 or 13 year old. A lot of the interactions seemed forced and "scripted" (I'm not sure if that makes sense since it is a book, but when I was reading through the characters sounded like a terrible scripted sitcom).

At the end of almost every chapter the author included a not-at-all-subtle foreshadow into the next problem they would face. A little bit of foreshadowing is great in an adventure book, but this was excessive and just not well done.

The characters all had interesting backgrounds and I did enjoy their continuous fight to survive despite all of the terrible experiences in the wilderness. They were balanced in their faults and strengths and for that I'm grateful because there were a lot of grating things about the writing.

This was very close to a DNF for me.
